TOP BIG PORTS IN VIETNAM

Vietnam has a very convenient location for water transport. Vietnam’s coastline length is over 3,260km, stretching from North to South. The major expanse of the coast in the South China Sea makes Vietnam a very significant trade point for both the West and the East. Therefore, Vietnam develops many large ports serving the import and export of goods by road. Understanding these ports is very necessary for the smooth import and export of goods. So, what are the major ports of Vietnam?

  1. Haiphong – the biggest port in the North of Vietnam ( VNHPH)

Hai Phong port is considered as the typical and largest export port in the North of Vietnam. Hai Phong port was built in the 18th century, until now, this port is invested in building, expanding and becoming one of the major ports in Southeast Asia. Hai Phong port includes a number of terminals as follows:

In 2021, amount of goods through Haiphong port is estimated at 151,124 thousand tons, up 8.05% over the same period in 2020. The revenue at Port in 2021 is estimated at 5,755.1 billion VND, up 5% compared to the same period last year. In which, the volume of container cargo through Haiphong port is estimated to be 92 million tons, up 9% compared to 2020, in which, container cargo through Hai Phong seaport continues to have a remarkable growth with an increase of 13 %.             For the number of vessel calling to Hai Phong port is also increasing year by year and achieving impressive numbers. In 2021, The number of vessel has reached more than 17,100 vessel, an increase of nearly 300 vessel compared to 2020.

Near Haiphong port, there are some factories of big branches such as: Samsung. Foxconn, LG,… so electronics components, mobile phone, consuming goods,… is the main goods that export from Haiphong port.

  1. Da Nang Port – VNDAD

Established in 1901, with it is location in Da Nang Bay with an area of 100km2 and a convenient transportation system, Da Nang Port is now an important port of the central region. Da Nang Port was also chosen as the final point of the East-West Economic Corridor, connecting the four countries of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, as the main gateway to the East Sea for the whole region.

Different from Hai Phong port, Da Nang port has 3 terminal:

Tien Sa Terminal is the main terminal, length is 8 km, depth is 12m, capable of receiving vessel from 30,000 to 50,000 DWT, container vessel of up to 4,000 TEU.

Lien Chieu is currently a specialized terminal attached to Lien Chieu Industrial Park, capable of receiving ships up to 10,000 DWT.

Tho Quang is a terminal serving the exploitation needs of Tho Quang fishing port and the ports of the Military Factory during the construction, completion and reception of ships up to 10,000DWT.

As the data of 2021, Da Nang Port has a cargo volume through the seaport of more than 10.7 million tons. The volume of container cargo through Da Nang port in 2021 reached 576481 Tues, up 12.09% more than 2020.

  1. Qui Nhon Port – VNUIH

Also in the central region of Vietnam such as Da Nang port, Quy Nhon port is an option for exporting- importing goods. Quy Nhon port can receive vessel up to 30,000DWT in/out normally and vessel of 50,000 DWT. As the data of 2021, Qui Nhon Port has volume cargo reached around 11.4 million tons. The amount of containers that through this port is over 160,095 Teus, with 1234 vessel in/ out.

  1. Ba Ria- Vung tau Port

Vung Tau Port currently includes 4 berths.

Cai Mep terminal: this is the main terminal for container vessel. Currently, this terminal is capable of receiving vessel up to 100,000 DWT. Almost vessel that exporting from Vung Tau will be berth at this terminal.

Phu My, My Xuan terminal: is a general port area, another container port currently capable of receiving vessel up to 80,000 DWT.

Dinh river Terminal: currently capable of receiving vessel of up to 30,000 DWT

In 2021, the total volume of cargo through Vung Tau port is estimated at over 113.2 million tons. Meanwhile, goods through Cai Mep terminal will reach nearly 104.6 million tons, up 2 % compared to 2020.

Despite being affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, the total volume of container cargo through this port still reached about 8.35 million TEUs, up 11% over the same period last year. Import and export container volume through the port is 4.54 million TEU.

  1. Ho Chi Minh port ( VNCLI)

Considered as a typical port in the southern region of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh port is a cluster of many large and small ports, considered an economic gateway with an important strategic position of Vietnam. Ho chi Minh port was established in 1860, currently the port includes the following terminals:

  • Cat Lai port: This is the largest and most typical port of Ho Chi Minh, also the largest port in Vietnam, in the top 21 major container ports in the world.
  • Tan Cang Phu Huu port
  • Tan Can Hiep Phuoc port
  • VITC port
  • Tan Thuan Port

The total volume of goods passing through Ho Chi Minh port in 2021 is nearly 170 million tons. The number of Containers through the port is 7.2 million TEUS, of which Cat Lai port accounts for nearly 5.8 million TUES.
