Vietnam has a coffee area of ​​over 664 thousand hectares, with an output of over 1.5 million tons of beans. Vietnamese coffee has been exported to more than 80 countries and regions.

For coffee, India is the sixth largest producer in the world. As a major producer, India imports a large amount of coffee for export processing.

In the 2020 – 2021 crop year, India’s coffee output was 309 thousand tons, of which 70% was for export and 30% was for domestic consumption. In the first 11 months of 2021, India imported US$ 115 million of coffee, with the main sources being Indonesia, Kenya and Vietnam. 1. Export procedure of coffee from Vietnam to India

According to the current regulation, Coffee is not in the List of prohibited Exports from Vietnam, so the enterprise can do the export procedure pursuant to current stipulations.

  • HS Code

In order to properly determine policies, procedures of the  export, one of the first thing needed to determine is the HS code of the commodity

According to Chapter 09 of Vietnam’s import and export tariff in 2020, Robusta coffee beans or Arabica coffee beans, whether roasted or not roasted, with decaffeinated active ingredients are applied the following: HS CODE: 0901

  • Customs Duties on exporting Coffee in Vietnam

VAT on exporting Coffee: pursuant to current stipulations, VAT on exported commodity is 0%

Export duty: Coffee is not in Vietnam’s nomenclature of taxable exports, therefore, the exporters do not have to pay export tax.

2. Delivery of coffee from Vietnam to India

–          By Air Freight

Air freight from India to Vietnam is significantly faster than ocean shipping, with consignments typically taking from 2- 4 days to reach their destination. It should be noted that air freight is more expensive than shipping by sea, especially for consignments weighing 100kg or more.

Shipment by sea is suitable for heavy items with big volumes and its shipping time is slower compared to transportation by air, however, the sea freight is cheaper as well. Normally, the transit time from VietNam to India is about 15 – 40 days, depending on ship service being direct or transit. There are many ocean lines that provide this route such as: MCC, MSC, YML,OOCL, COSCO, WANHAI, CMA CGM, MOL, HAPAG LLOYD

  •       FCL (Full container load) Transportation of full containers (Usually there are 3 main types of containers: 20 DC, 40DC, 40HC).

  •       LCL (Less than container load), the LCL is preferred by air freight, however if you want to save cost and time is not an issue, sea freight is still the right solution which is suitable for small amounts of goods.
